Welcome to Mupedza Nhamo
Welcome to Mupedza Nhamo was developed by Bidule 4 AG and published jointly by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The game was available in German and French and was aimed at 8th grade students for independent use on a PC.
Gameplay and technology
The game is designed as an adventure: players explore rooms and interview people, with dialogues presented partly as speech and partly as text. Sounds and music create specific moods – for example, at a market or on busy streets – and support the transfer of information through spoken text, which appears on the screen in keywords. The game comprises a total of four games.
Story
The story centers on Bila, the 17-year-old lead singer of the Swiss rock band Rags, whose stage T-shirts have accidentally ended up in the used clothing collection. In search of them, she ends up in Harare, at the large second-hand clothing market “Mupedza Nhamo” – which means “end of poverty” in the Shona language. There she encounters a complex network: while the trade in used clothing is a lucrative business, Zimbabwe itself produces high-quality cotton and processes it into clothing. So why do European used clothes end up on the market in Harare? This question – and the search for the T-shirts – is Bila's task and, at the same time, that of the players. In this way, the students playfully explore North-South relations and approaches to sustainable development using the example of clothing production. The story was researched on site in Zimbabwe.
