Traps ‘n’ Treasures
Traps 'n' Treasures is a platforming and action-adventure video game developed by Roman Werner for the Amiga. The game was first released in Germany in 1993 by Starbyte Software. The English version of the game was released a few months later, in 1994, by Krisalis Software. Reviewers and players liked the game.
When Traps 'n 'Treasures was released, the Amiga was already in the twilight of its life cycle. Yet it was precisely during this phase that talented developers like Roman Werner demonstrated the true potential of the Amiga 500 's hardware. This game set new standards in terms of playability, animation, and technical sophistication.
The player takes on the role of Jeremy Flynn, a pirate captain whose crew has been kidnapped by the evil pirate Redbeard. Stranded on a treacherous archipelago, Flynn must fight his way through ruins, jungles, and caves to free his men and, as befits a pirate, bag as much gold and treasure as possible along the way. Although Traps 'n 'Treasures appears at first glance to be a classic platformer, it offers a depth of gameplay that many competitors lacked: Action-adventure elements, interactive environment, inventory system and a shop.
The adventure game features four very large levels containing all sorts of puzzles, surprises and hidden features – many of which require the player to perform a series of actions to uncover potentially massive bonuses. Many of the puzzles involve moving and positioning crates to gain access to higher points in the levels. Jeremy Flynn can use both weapons and tools to solve puzzles, traverse levels or fight enemies. He can buy new tools, weapons, medical kits and fruit by collecting coins and spending them in shops located throughout the levels. The game's interface features a classic health bar, as well as a "vitamin bar" that gradually fills up as Flynn collects fruit, rewarding the player with another life when it is full.
The standout feature of Traps 'n 'Treasures is undoubtedly the programming. Roman Werner managed to achieve on a standard Amiga 500 (with only a 512 KB RAM expansion) things that seemed reserved for the more powerful consoles of the time like parallax scrolling, animations and performance. The game offers extremely smooth scrolling across multiple layers, giving the game world an enormous sense of depth. In terms of animations, the character of Jeremy Flynn is animated with a level of detail that is second to none – from the way he pulls himself up on ledges to his “idle animations”. And the performance is very steady. Despite the detailed graphics and the many sprites on screen, the frame rate remains consistently stable, which is essential for that precise jump-'n'-run feel. The graphics were made by Orlando alias Roland Petermann, who may be called the graphical spearhead of the Amiga. And the cool music was made by Ruedi Hugentobler.
After all, Traps 'n' Treasures showcases an exceptional level of polishing regarding its visuals, music, animation, puzzle mechanics, and sound design. It is a game that demonstrates just how much passion and craftsmanship went into the Swiss development scene of the early 1990s.
