Super Bag

Super Bag is a point-and-click adventure game released in 1993 in freeware format. It was developed as part of a national Swiss waste management campaign initiated by the federal government. The game was created in collaboration with the media office Akos Broder Leob AG in Basel and was funded by various public institutions and Swiss organizations (including the waste management service of Zurich (AWZ), BUWAL, Coop Switzerland, the Principality of Liechtenstein, as well as the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft, Glarus, Schaffhausen, and Solothurn, the Migros Cooperative Federation, and recycling organizations Alu-Recycling and IGORA). The game was programmed with VGA graphics for Mac and Windows 7.

Game play It presents its theme—waste and disposal—in a playful and partly humorous way, combining it with a strongly locally rooted visual design. In terms of gameplay, Super Bag involves clicking on objects within a household to discover hidden items and fill all garbage bags. The goal is to uncover all objects and correctly sort the waste into the appropriate recycling streams. If the player makes a mistake, a pig appears as humorous feedback—a reference to the Basel German expression “d’Sau beko,” meaning “to mess up” or “to get it wrong.” Many objects feature small animations or humorous surprises, such as a television with a playback sequence, a razor, a cassette recorder, or a box from which a doll jumps out.

Local Context and Swiss Cultural References The game is strongly rooted in Switzerland, particularly the Basel region. Many scenes include local references, such as the Rhine with the Grossmünster and a waste facility in the background. Everyday objects and packaging, such as old Migros milk cartons, are also part of the game world. The game likely just missed the introduction of the well-known “Bebbi-Sack” (June 1993); otherwise, this would probably have been depicted even more specifically in the game.
