Backstage

“Backstage” is a short promotional game for the Liveclub, developed by the German advertising agency Art Department with a German team, programmed by René Straub with graphics by Ingo Mesche, and released as freeware. The game is only available in German and takes about 3–4 hours to complete.

The story follows a protagonist trying to win a backstage ticket for a meet & greet with his favorite rockstar, Alex X. Pose. A local radio station holds a contest with five questions about Alex X. Pose's new album and current tour. The player must buy CDs and gather information to answer the questions.

The puzzle structure is rather simple and boils down to basic fetch quests and object exchanges (the guy at the pool wants object X in exchange for Y, which in turn you need to receive Z).

The game serves as advertising for the Liveclub, a membership club offering advantages for buying CDs and sending regular products or gifts. The club directly or indirectly helps solve in-game tasks. The promotional message is clear: Liveclub = good, all others = bad.

Art Department Werbeagentur GmbH was an advertising agency based in Bochum and the predecessor of phenomedia AG. It was founded in 1993 by Markus Scheer and Frank Ziemlinski. Both had previously worked at Starbyte Software before eventually going into business for themselves.

Swiss game designer René Straub worked on two more games from Art Department in 1993. He programmed Amiga versions of the Karamalz Cup and Snackzone.

In 1998, Art Department's successor Phenomedia was assigned to develop the Moorhuhn Game for V&B Hamburg, as an advertisement game for Johnnie Walker. The game became world famous.
