Aventura I

Aventura I: Le Manoir Maudit (1989, Atari ST) is a Swiss role-playing game developed by Jean-Claude Schopfer, who, while still a teenager living in Château-d’Oex, single-handedly created the story, programming, and graphics. The game was entirely programmed in BASIC and is controlled using both keyboard and mouse. It is available exclusively in French.

The opening of the story is presented in the game’s manual. The player takes on the role of Marc, a tourist visiting Château-d’Oex, who enters an abandoned manor and is drawn into a parallel world. This same manor appears on the title screen as a digitized photograph, accompanied by music by Jean-Michel Jarre. At the beginning of the game, the player must also assign attribute points—strength, agility, charisma, and wisdom—to their character.

After awakening in the parallel world of Lastra, the wizard of Count Dactar VII explains the mission: the player must defeat the lord of evil, Malcor. To succeed, the player must acquire equipment—including the “Blacksword”—and overcome a series of challenges and ordeals.

The game unfolds across several types of gameplay sequences. A two-dimensional, top-down view allows the player to explore a vast world, including towns and various shops; this component is inspired by Ultima IV (1985). Another major segment consists of a dungeon represented as a labyrinth with three-dimensional walls, in which the player engages in successive battles against a wide range of enemies; this section draws inspiration from Dungeon Master (1987).

The game was awarded the 1989 Crédit Suisse Junior Software Prize, presented during the 1990 edition of the Lausanne computer fair “Computer.” Despite this recognition, its distribution remained limited and relatively obscure—though not entirely absent, as evidenced by Schopfer's later encounter with a pirated version of his game.

Schopfer initially planned to develop the game as part of a multi-episode series. However, the loss of saved data during the development of the second installment led him to abandon the project.
