Swiss Map Trophy

The Swiss Map Trophy is a digital teaching and learning game that teaches users how to use Swiss national maps in an entertaining way. It was designed as an interactive learning medium that promotes cartographic skills in a playful way.

The program is aimed particularly at beginners, enabling them to learn basic map reading skills. In addition to this introduction, a legend is also available. This contains the map symbols used on Swiss national maps, illustrated with corresponding real images. A central element of the game is the so-called terrain and map game (Trophy), in which players can perform map work in two different modes: working with a road map and with a terrain map.

It is available in German and French. The game was technically implemented using Adobe® Director®. The client and producer is the Army Digital Media Center (DMA), based in Bern. There is also a modularized online version of the Swiss Map Trophy on the e-learning platform of the DDPS (Swiss Department of Defense).

The Swiss Map Trophy was developed in 1996 by swisstopo (the Swiss Federal Office of Topography) and received an award in the form of the “Golden Mouse.”
